I didn’t fit the mould, so I made my own: How Elaine Montilla redefined belonging in tech

In the latest RACE in STEM podcast, host Steve Fuller sits down with Elaine Montilla, Chief Technology Officer, author, TEDx speaker, and founder of 5xMinority, to explore her powerful journey of resilience, representation, and leadership in tech.

From the Dominican Republic to the Tech C-Suite

Elaine’s story begins in the Dominican Republic, where she grew up surrounded by community, connection, and care. At 17, she moved to the United States without speaking English and had to rebuild her life from scratch. What followed was a remarkable transformation from student to tech executive.

“Education was my ticket,” she shares. “It was the one thing no one could take away from me.”

Elaine’s early struggles with language, identity, and belonging shaped her perspective on leadership. Her career and her life became about creating spaces where others could belong too.

Thriving as a Latina, Immigrant, and LGBTQ+ Leader in Tech

As a Latina, immigrant, and member of the LGBTQ+ community, Elaine often found herself as the only one in the room. She faced microaggressions, bias, and the constant pressure to prove herself. But instead of trying to fit in, she chose to stand out.

“All the things I once thought were problems became my superpowers, my accent, my curls, my background. They set me apart.”

Elaine turned those challenges into her leadership philosophy: lead with empathy, celebrate difference, and lift others as you rise.

Through her platform 5xMinority, she empowers women and underrepresented voices in STEM to own their worth and show up authentically. Her work includes talks, workshops, and her Burnout Guide – You’re Allowed to Log Off – which helps professionals manage stress and lead sustainably.

Representation and the Power of Voice

Elaine discusses the importance of representation in leadership and why diverse teams drive innovation. She advocates for companies to build cultures where people can be themselves without fear of judgment, because inclusion isn’t about fitting into a mould; it’s about reshaping it altogether.

Her message to women and minorities in STEM is simple:

  • Own your value from day one.

  • Document your achievements.

  • Build networks and mentor others.

  • Stop waiting to feel ready just start.

“Your differences are your strengths. Don’t hide them, embrace them.”

Beyond Tech: Creating Real Change

When she’s not leading in tech, Elaine continues to mentor, speak, and create inclusive tools through the 5xMinority Store, where every purchase supports diversity and leadership initiatives.

Her story is one of courage, conviction, and community, a reminder that the path to belonging isn’t about fitting the mould, but making your own.
