MedTech and Diagnostic products only reach the market with the right scientific, regulatory, and engineering expertise behind them. In this spotlight, Michael Kakoullis, Associate Director at BioTalent, shares his perspective from working across R&D, Regulatory, Quality, and Engineering recruitment in Europe, along with the trends shaping demand across the sector.
Can you give us an overview of your role and your area of expertise at BioTalent?
I focus on leading our R&D, Regulatory, Quality, and Engineering permanent services across Europe for the MedTech and Diagnostics sector. I partner with organisations ranging from SMEs to blue-chip companies to deliver the best talent and help bring innovative products to market efficiently and successfully.
What trends are you currently seeing in the life sciences market, and which skillsets are in highest demand?
We’re seeing less R&D being done by large blue-chip businesses, with more emphasis on M&A activity. Venture capital and private equity funding is increasingly focused on ‘tried & tested’ products in the market, rather than potentially riskier or more experimental innovations.
What inspired you to specialise in life sciences recruitment?
Like many, I fell into recruitment and instantly enjoyed supporting people’s careers. With a background in Chemistry, I’ve always had a soft spot for life sciences and the impact it can have on improving people’s lives.
What is the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?
“Stick to the plan and trust the process.” Success in recruitment comes from consistency, doing the same activity day in and day out, focusing on marginal gains, and understanding that ups and downs are part of the journey.
If you weren’t working in recruitment, what career path might you have pursued?
I’d likely have ended up working for one of the companies I partner with now!
What do you enjoy most about your role at BioTalent?
I enjoy seeing the impact of my work on both candidates and clients, helping people advance their careers while supporting organisations in delivering innovative products to market. No two days are the same, and that variety keeps the role rewarding.
