At BioTalent, success in life sciences recruitment comes from understanding both the science and the people behind it. Greg Hammond, Associate Director, brings a strong technical background and a commercial mindset to his work, supporting organisations as they scale and optimise their manufacturing capabilities. In this spotlight, he shares the skills currently in demand, what led him into the industry, and a few insights beyond the day-to-day.
Can you give us an overview of your role and your area of expertise at BioTalent?
I lead our Boston office, focusing on hiring across Technical Operations and Manufacturing for Pharma, Biotech, and CDMOs. Our team also supports Quality and Engineering functions. I partner with organisations to understand their operational needs and deliver high-impact talent that helps drive manufacturing excellence and technical innovation.
What trends are you currently seeing in the life sciences market, and which skillsets are in highest demand?
Subject Matter Experts across MSAT remain consistently in demand. More recently, we’re seeing increasing demand for process intensification experts and professionals with experience implementing automation and digital systems into manufacturing. These skillsets are crucial as companies look to optimise production, improve efficiency, and adopt modern, data-driven manufacturing practices.
What inspired you to specialise in life sciences recruitment?
With a background in Biochemistry and Green Biotechnology, I initially applied for scientific roles but ended up in recruitment. I’ve always loved being involved in the Biotech and Pharma world, and in many ways, it’s been the perfect fit, I get to stay close to the science without being confined to a lab!
If you weren’t working in recruitment, what career path might you have pursued?
When I interviewed for my first recruitment role, I was also interviewing for a PhD. I think I would’ve pursued that path if I hadn’t been offered the role in recruitment.
Outside of work, what’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
It’s probably no surprise that I’m an avid golfer, I’ll be playing in some state and national qualifiers this year. But what surprises most people is my past in extreme sports, particularly white water kayaking. Quite a change of pace from a round on the links!
What do you enjoy most about your role at BioTalent?
I enjoy being at the intersection of people, science, and business. Helping clients solve complex operational challenges while seeing candidates grow and succeed in their careers is incredibly rewarding. No two days are the same, which keeps the role engaging and exciting.
